Ah February, the month we celebrate love. God, Himself, has taught us how to love; unconditionally and sacrificially. It is where we perfect His love in ourselves that the world will identify us as Christians. In just the same way, when we
refuse to perfect His love in us, the world remains confused about who we are, or worse yet, about what a Christian truly is.
We know from I John 4:18 that perfect love casts out fear. We also know from I John 4:19 that we love
because He first loved us. We know from I Corinthians 13:4-8a that it is not based on fluffy,
surface emotions, but on a strong commitment to one another accomplished by hard work. The hard work of forgiving, forgetting and reconciling is far more
difficult than any manual labor ever could be.
Christian love is not for the faint of heart.
We know from Hebrews 12:5-6 that the Lord
disciplines those whom He loves. He remains our friend by telling us what He knows we need to hear, not by telling us what we want to hear. And then in John 15:14 He tells us we are His friends if we do what He commands. He then takes it a step further, telling us in I John 5:3 that our love is not just
connected to doing what He commands, but in
doing it with the right attitude. For if we view
His commandments as burdensome, it is not love.
So this February, let’s love life, let’s love one another and let’s love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength.
